Hello everyone
I am back with my final post for the My Favorite Things Sketch Challenge – it’s been so much fun and I wanted to finish with a card that features all things bright and fun!
So here it is, in all it’s Southern Lights glory. A little penguin scene to fit the current week’s sketch. Here is the sketch, and I have changed it up a little bit.
I flipped my design so that it was a horizontal card. And each of my images forms one of the five squares. But to fit them all on without masking and crowding the card, I needed to make this card 7″ wide. I love to make a different sized card every now and again and I really wanted to use the newly released Snow Special set.
Warning! This card was not quick to make – it took me a couple of hours but I never mind spending the time if it goes the way I want it.
To begin, I created the background by blending a mix of Distress Oxides and Distress Inks over a Tim Holtz Distress Watercolor Cardstock panel. I did make about 3 panels before I was happy, one of which I have saved for another card. I used five colours (see list below) and the important thing here is just to make sure you don’t mix your pink and green as it will go a muddy brown. Aside from that, happy blending! And feel pleased that you got your cardio workout for the day :). I added some white splatters with white gouache and left the panel to dry.
My images were stamped onto some Bristol Board Extra Smooth cardstock with Versafine Onyx Black ink and heat embossed with clear embossing powder. I coloured them with Zigs (colours listed below) and left them to dry before cutting out with the coordinating die-namics.
I trimmed the sky background panel to about 6.5″ so that it would mat onto a 7″ top folding card base with a little border showing, and then adhered that with DST to the base.
The snow banks were die cut with the MFT Stitched Snow Drifts die – and because the snow bank needed to be 6.5″ wide and the die is 6″, I did have to die-cut it twice, making sure to line up the die again for the second cut, so that it looks like one long snow bank. I got lucky as I lined it up ok, but if you miss a little and it doesn’t look smooth – pop an image over it!
My sentiment was stamped on the bank of snow. I toyed around with a strip in the sky but I really didn’t want to cover any of the sky, so stamped it down on the left. This snow panel was then adhered with DST.
Lastly, my images were either positioned with DST or foam tape and then I tried adding some shimmer onto their hats and scarves but it really didn’t work with the Zigs. However, I don’t think it matters too much, I think there is enough going on 🙂
So that finishes my card. It’s been a big honour to Guest Design for My Favorite Things this month and I send my thanks to them for the very kind invitation. It’s been a lot of fun playing with this fabulous new release!
Happy crafting and thank you for visiting. I wish you all a great week!

It’s fabulous and it is good now and again to make something a little bit different in size – stretch ourselves. The background turned out great and I had to laugh at you getting a cardio work out. Do you remember The Karate Kid and ‘Wax on, Wax Off’? This is blend on, blend off! Haha! I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of your inspiration during your time as GD. I rather agree with Andrea above and hope MFT might take you on full time! xxx
