Hello there
Today I am back with a video for you where I show simple Copic colouring and some ink blending using Distress Oxide inks. My card features the beautiful Happily Ever After set from Clearly Besotted – joining the illustrious list of one of my all time favourite florals! I normally watercolour my larger floral stamps but this time I wanted to colour it with Copics and include an ink blended panel behind.
There is nothing complicated about my colouring at all. I am by no means an expert at colouring – there are many people out there who are very talented with them. But as always, I like to show you don’t need to be an expert to create a pretty card. I share some hints and tips about Copic colouring below but they are also covered in the video.
So here is the card for you.
And here is the video.
A few hints and tips about colouring with Copics
I used Sandy Allnock’s Hex Chart to select my colours. I do not own all the Copic markers and the Hex Chart makes it really easy for me to see what I have in my collection and what will work well together.
I chose my Copics after I had decided on my background colours. So I picked colours that would work well with Abandoned Coral and Wild Honey Oxides. The flower colours were pretty easy to select as they are similar to Abandoned Coral but for the leaves I picked a colour that I thought would work well with both Oxide colours. I wanted to veer away from my normal pinks and greens and this also gives me a chance to find some new Copic colour combinations that I enjoy on a card.
There is no real right or wrong with Copics. You can colour from lightest to darkest and back down to lightest again. Or you can just colour darkest to lightest and finish. Or lightest to darkest and stop. I do a mix in the video to show you there is not really any big difference at the end – you just might find one way easier than another.
With smaller colouring areas I do find it easier to do darkest to lightest – this helps prevent bleeding as the colouring areas do not become over saturated. Larger areas you can play around a bit more with the blending. But you need to work in the way that you most feel comfortable – get your markers out and see what comes more naturally to you!
Always have a Colourless Blender to hand – this will help you deal with any ink that strays over the black lines as you can use it to take the colour away.
You do not have to use colours that are next to each other in blending groups and you will see that I jump around a lot with my colours. (You can see the colours that I used in the video listed below). This is where the Hex Chart really helps you see what colours blend more easily together. If you have two colours that are a bit far apart and are not blending so well together, you can do tip to tip blending but I’ll save that for another video.
Bump up your colouring with pencil details – this is a very common thing to do with Copics. Adding fine pencil details can really add depth and interest to the image. Again I don’t show this but am happy to do this in another video if anyone would like to see it. You can still add lots of detail with Copics and especially using a dark colour in the nooks and crannies to help the areas pop a little.
Thank you as always for your company today, I hope that you enjoyed the video. I will be back soon with another project for you. Happy Crafting friends!
Copics used: Flowers (R24, R22, R02, R11), Leaves (BG23, BG11, BG000), Colourless Blender

pretty!! i actually really like to color. it’s one of the more relaxing things I do. I don’t actually own copics – I color with Spectrum Noirs. They are what I can afford. They work – and I enjoy them. all the tips work just the same.

This is a gorgeous card, Lisa! Copics are the one thing I stopped myself from getting into, although I do LOVE the brilliant coloring that can be achieved with them. Even so, I appreciated your tips about coloring, especially the tip to add more depth and dimension to a colored image with colored pencils! Hugs, Darnell
