This challenge is all about colouring for 10 minutes a day, and whilst I do that on some days, there are many times when I go on for longer. Today was one of those days!
I was inspired by my friend Tina who used a stencil to create a pretty frame to highlight her image on a recent Christmas Card.
Here is my card:
I started by stamping the image into the centre of an A2 white card panel using my MISTI. I then took my stitched frame rectangles and dry embossed the stitched frame around the image. I don’t do this often enough and it is a good way to get extra mileage from your dies. By using the appropriate sandwich in your die-cutting machine and an embossing pad, you can emboss the detail rather than cut through the card – it’s pretty and it adds an additional little interest to the card.
I die-cut some masking paper to cover the image section, selected a suitable stencil and used distress ink and an ink blending tool to colour the border.
I peeled back the masking paper from the centre (magic!) to reveal the blank image with it’s pretty frame. One of the things I have been trying to do as part of the challenge is to use coloured pencils and I recently treated myself to a set of Faber Castell Polychromos and set about colouring the image.
With coloured pencils it is best to work in light layers, so I started each section with a thin layer and gradually built up the layers to create depth, and in doing so, left some areas as highlights. This does take a while but it is very relaxing and I like watching the image come to life. A little black glaze pen to her eyes and she was almost done!
I added a “ground” in so that she wasn’t floating around – I often forget to do this, but it makes such a difference to the overall “setting” of the image. Lastly I added the sentiment and some perfect pearls for additional embellishment. After I took the pictures, I decided to add a little shimmer to the apple and parts of her dress (see I am always adding more bits)….
I really love these images and I think they suit all sorts of colouring mediums but particularly coloured pencils. I bought 3 images recently and I have a feeling I may buy more…..
I hope you all have a wonderful week, and if you are in the US, a happy thanksgiving to you and your families.
As always I would love to hear your thoughts on my card, and thank you for stopping by.
